Celine Date Code: How to Read It and Date Your Bag
Publié le novembre 05 2026
A Celine date code is a short code stamped inside the bag that tells you where and when it was made. On a recent bag, you can read it in seconds. On a vintage Macadam, it's a different story: the codes are short, and no reliable source explains how to decode them with certainty. Here's where to find the code, how to read it depending on the era, and what it actually proves. Every example in this article is photographed on our own bags.
Where is the date code on a Celine bag?
The date code is inside the bag, either on a small leather tab sewn into the lining or embossed directly into the lining itself. It's often tucked inside a pocket, usually the zipped one.
On our Céline bucket bag in Macadam canvas, the tab is sewn to the edge of the inner zip pocket. You have to lift it to read the code: M94, followed by an asterisk.
If you can't find it straight away, check every pocket and run along the inside seams: the location changes depending on the model and the era.
How do you read a Celine date code?
A modern Celine date code follows the X-XX-#### format: one letter, two letters, then four digits. The letters refer to the factory, the digits to the week and year of production.
| Part of the code | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| First letter + two letters (e.g. S-CU) | The factory. Celine doesn't publish a list of its factories. |
| 1st and 3rd digits | The week of production (01 to 53) |
| 2nd and 4th digits | The year of production |
Example: S-CU-3196. Take the 1st and 3rd digits (3 and 9): week 39. Then the 2nd and 4th (1 and 6): 2016. The bag was made in the 39th week of 2016.
Be careful, there are two ways to read it. On some bags, the four digits read in order: the first two give the week, the last two the year. To know which one applies, do both calculations. If one gives a week higher than 53, or a year when the model didn't exist yet, that's the wrong reading.
Some bags also have two lines of code on the same tab. That's normal: read each line the same way.
One detail that matters: a date code is a production code, not a serial number. It isn't unique, and several authentic bags can carry exactly the same one.
Céline or Celine: the logo dates the bag too
The Céline logo lost its accent in September 2018, under Hedi Slimane's creative direction. A bag stamped "Céline" with an accent was made before that date; a bag stamped "CELINE" was made after.
This is the first thing to check: the year given by the date code has to match the logo. A code from 2021 on a bag stamped "Céline" with an accent, or the other way round, doesn't add up.
| Era | Logo | Date code |
|---|---|---|
| Vintage (Macadam canvas) | Céline, with accent | Short, non-standard codes (e.g. M94, F/10) |
| Phoebe Philo (2008-2018) | Céline, with accent | X-XX-#### format |
| Since late 2018 | CELINE, no accent | X-XX-#### format |
Triomphe, Luggage, Macadam: how the date code differs
The reading method stays the same, but each model has its own consistency checks between the code, the logo and the year the model was launched.
Triomphe canvas (Ava, Cabas, Folco…)
The current Triomphe canvas was created by Hedi Slimane in 2018 and launched with the Fall 2019 collection. A Triomphe canvas bag with a code dated before 2018 is a problem, and so is a logo with an accent.
Luggage and other Phoebe Philo-era models
The Luggage, like the other models designed during the Phoebe Philo years, reads in the X-XX-#### format. Check that the year in the code matches the logo: before late 2018, the tab should read "Céline" with an accent.
Vintage Macadam
Vintage Macadam bags don't follow the X-XX-#### format. They carry short codes, which we cover in the next section.
Vintage Céline Macadam codes: what we actually know
On vintage Céline Macadam bags, the codes are short and don't follow the modern format. No reliable source explains how to read them, so be wary of guides that claim to decode them.
Macadam canvas uses the chain pattern Céline Vipiana designed in the early 1970s, inspired by the chain surrounding the Arc de Triomphe. Here's what we've found on our own pieces from that period:
- Macadam bucket bag: M94, with an asterisk underneath, on a leather tab inside the zip pocket.
- Macadam envelope clutch: F/10.
It's tempting to read "94" as 1994. But no reliable source confirms that reading, and the vintage codes we see don't all follow the same pattern. So the code on a Macadam can't be used to date it precisely. What matters is that it's there, that it's crisp, and that it's consistent with the rest of the bag.
A detail we see on our oldest Macadam bags
On the oldest Macadam bags we've handled, the inner zips have a gold-tone metal pull: a small medallion engraved with a C, hanging from a short chain. This is something we've observed on our own pieces, not a rule published by Celine, but it's one more clue for placing a bag in time.
Is there a Celine date code checker online?
No. Celine doesn't offer an official checker, and the house doesn't publish which codes match which factories. Online tools only check the format of the code: they can't tell you whether your bag is authentic.
A well-formed code is only a clue. A fake bag can carry a perfectly plausible code, since codes are easy to copy.
Why the date code alone can't authenticate a Celine bag
Date codes are easy to copy: they help rule out obvious fakes, but on their own they never prove a bag is authentic.
What to check on top of the code:
- The embossing: a genuine code is pressed into the leather with an even depth. It's never printed on the surface.
- Overall consistency: the year in the code, the logo (with or without accent) and the launch date of the model must all line up.
- Craftsmanship: canvas, leather, stitching, hardware.
At RARR Vintage, every bag is authenticated with Entrupy, which analyses the materials under a microscope, on top of our own inspection. The Entrupy certificate is included from €1,000, and available as a €30 option below that. Find out more on our authenticity page.

Celine date code FAQ
Do Celine bags have serial numbers?
No. Celine bags have a date code, which shows the factory and the production date. It isn't a unique number: several authentic bags can share the same code.
What year is my Celine bag?
On a recent bag, look at the four digits of the code: the 2nd and 4th give the year. Then check that the logo matches ("Céline" with an accent before late 2018, "CELINE" after). On a vintage Macadam, the code can't date the bag with certainty.
Is a Celine bag without a date code fake?
Not necessarily for a vintage piece, since those codes don't follow a standard format. On a recent bag, however, a missing code, a badly formed one, or one that's printed instead of embossed is a red flag.
Can I check a Celine date code online?
There's no official checker. Online tools only check the format of the code, and a fake can carry a perfectly plausible one.
Do you authenticate Celine bags for private individuals?
We only authenticate bags consigned with us. Each piece is then inspected by our team and scanned with Entrupy.
