The birth of the Triomphe motif
In the 1970s, inspired by the chains surrounding the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, Céline Vipiana created a motif of interlocking double "C"s. This emblem became the house's visual signature: it can be found printed on Macadam canvas and on the clasps of many vintage bags. It also gave its name to the Triomphe bag, relaunched in 2019 by Hedi Slimane.
From a children's shoe store to an icon of minimalism
Before leather goods, Céline started in 1945 as a made-to-measure children's shoe workshop, before expanding into handbags and women's ready-to-wear. Under the direction of Phoebe Philo (2008-2017), the house reinvented itself around a refined minimalism that would leave a lasting mark on fashion: this is the era that enthusiasts now call "Old Céline."
