Description & History
The 1995 Keepall 50 is the ideal travel companion for those who know how to travel light — large enough for a long weekend, airline cabin compatible, with its full set of padlock, key, nametag, and handle tie. A bag that has seen it all, and is ready to see it all again.
The Keepall was launched in 1930 by Gaston-Louis Vuitton — a direct response to the democratization of travel and the rise of automobiles and aviation. Initially named "Tient-tout" (Hold-all) then "Globe-Trotter", it was conceived as the soft and light counterpart to the rigid trunks that were then the house's renown. Its success was immediate: light, flexible, in waterproof coated Monogram canvas, it accompanied a new generation of travelers who left quickly and returned laden. Audrey Hepburn and Elizabeth Taylor were among the first to make it their signature travel bag, solidifying its status as an iconic piece for elegant men and women on the move.
The 50 format is — according to Louis Vuitton himself — the most versatile in the range: large enough to swallow clothes, shoes, and a toiletry bag for a long weekend, and compact enough to pass as cabin baggage on the vast majority of airlines. Its single compartment, without subdivisions, is deliberately designed for the traveler who knows how to organize — you put what you want, in the order you want. The coated Monogram canvas — created in 1896 by Georges Vuitton, waterproof and almost indestructible — does not age: it is the vachetta that tells the story of the journey, developing over the years a warm caramel patina that is the mark of a life well-lived.
This 1995 example is sold with its full set of original accessories — gilt LV padlock, key, nametag, and leather handle tie, a rarity in the vintage market where these small items often disappear over the course of travels. The canvas is clean, the interior is clean, no odor. The leather straps show slight cracking consistent with 30 years of age — visible in the photos, without affecting strength. Sold with Rarr Vintage dustbag.
