Clip-on, hoop, dangle earrings: vintage styles
A large proportion of vintage designer earrings are clip-ons, rather than styles for pierced ears: this was the standard format for luxury costume jewellery from the 1970s to the 1990s, designed to be worn without a piercing. Today, they can be worn on both pierced and unpierced ears, and remain sought after for their comfort and hold. Alongside clip-ons, there are also hoops, studs and more festive dangle styles.
The brands and materials to know
Rhinestones and pearls characterise Dior and Chanel pieces (enamel, mother-of-pearl, intertwined CCs), coloured crystals characterise Givenchy, the Medusa head is Versace's historic signature, while Nina Ricci and Sonia Rykiel work more with cabochons and hammered gold-plated metal. Each house developed, in the 1980s-2000s, a vocabulary of materials and shapes unique to high-end costume jewellery.
