Solid gold, gold-plated, gold-tone metal: understanding the finishes
On the vintage jewelry market, several gold finishes coexist, and it is best to know their differences before buying. Solid gold is a gold alloy present throughout the piece, measured in karats: 18 karat (75% gold) is the standard in French jewelry. Gold-plated refers to a layer of gold deposited onto a base metal, often brass, which in France must be at least 3 microns thick to qualify for this designation. Below that, it is referred to as fine gold-gilt. Finally, gold-tone metal refers to a gold finish with no guaranteed thickness: this is the case for most costume jewelry from major fashion houses. Our product descriptions specify the finish when known.

Iconic codes to know
The Christian Dior CD monogram, the Céline Triomphe, the Givenchy 4G logo, or the chains and CCs of Chanel: these vintage jewels bear the most recognizable visual codes of the major fashion houses from the 1970s to the 1990s. Often unavailable in boutiques today, they have become true collector's items.
