Description & history
The Balenciaga City is perhaps the bag that most changed the history of luxury leather goods in the 21st century — and this Mini in white leather with gold-tone hardware is one of its most desirable versions. Immaculate white, swaying tassels, gleaming gold hardware: a bag that gets noticed without shouting.
In 2001, Nicolas Ghesquière designed a bag for Balenciaga that didn't exist — lightweight, with no visible logo, a supple silhouette, and almost industrial hardware inspired by motorcycle culture. The house executives initially refused to produce it: "too soft, too light, not structured enough" for a time when the Louis Vuitton Speedy and Fendi Baguette reigned. Only 25 copies were made. Ghesquière slipped them into the hands of models at the FW2001 show — including Kate Moss. What happened next is fashion history: in a few months, the City became the most photographed bag of the 2000s, worn by Nicole Richie, the Olsens, the Hiltons, Sienna Miller. Ghesquière himself explained it simply: "No logo, very light, very effective. Women thought it was something they'd always have."
The white City with gold-tone hardware (Golden Hardware) is one of the most precious and rare versions of the model — the white enhances the contrast with the gold studs and zipper, giving the bag a look that is both edgy and luxurious, urban and elegant.
