Description & history
The Hermès Carré Ombres et Lumières · designed by Annie Faivre · published in 2001 · 100% silk · coral and peach background · orange-red border · hand-rolled hems · made in France · 88 × 88 cm.
Annie Faivre is one of that select group of in-house artists who have left an enduring mark on the style of Hermès scarves. Joining the house in the late 1970s and prolific for over three decades, she signed some of the most recognizable designs in the catalog — Tapis de Selle, L'Art des Steppes, Ombres et Lumières — each bearing her discreet signature, usually hidden within the motif like a small frog or salamander to be discovered. Published in 2001 for the spring-summer collection, Ombres et Lumières precisely plays on what its title announces: the contrast between rays of light and shadows, a graphic and vibrant composition that the sunny palette of this piece — coral, peach, gold, and orange-red — pushes to its maximum intensity. As with all Carrés 90, the manufacturing reflects the house's historical savoir-faire since 1937: the motif is first photo-engraved over a period that can range from six months to two years, broken down color by color, then flat screen-printed onto the silk twill woven in Pierre-Bénite, near Lyon — sometimes with more than thirty successive screens, one for each shade. The hand-rolled hems, sewn along the grain and never cut, finish each piece individually. The Carré 90, the house's historical format, allows for all kinds of ties: around the neck over a black coat to reveal the full palette, at the waist as a graphic belt, in the hair in a 60s headscarf style, or spread over the shoulders as a shawl in the evening. Delivered here with its original orange Hermès box and composition label, just as it was in the boutique.
