Françoise de la Perrière is one of the most renowned illustrators in the history of the Hermès carré. "Ludovicus Magnus" — Louis the Great, nickname of Louis XIV — is one of her most admired creations. Published in 1963, this carré depicts the Sun King on horseback in full royal attire, surrounded by an abundance of baroque ornaments: golden tassels, heraldic trumpets, oak leaf crowns. The pomp of the Grand Siècle, condensed into the 88 centimeters of the Hermès carré. The motif has been reissued only twice since its creation, in 1989 and then in 1997 — a sign of its rarity and the care with which Hermès manages its heritage. The khaki green color is one of the rarest and most sought-after versions: the dark background gives the gilded ornaments a depth and presence that lighter colors cannot match.
