Condition of a Pre-Owned Luxury Bag: How it Works and What You'll Find at RARR Vintage
Published by RARR Vintage — Buying Guide
This is often the first question buyers ask when discovering second-hand luxury: "But what condition is the bag in?" A legitimate question. Buying an item without seeing it in person requires understanding exactly what the terms used to describe its condition mean. In this article, we explain how the grading system works, what each level concretely implies—and above all, RARR Vintage's stance on this issue.
Why is the condition of a pre-owned luxury bag so important?
A luxury bag is not an ordinary product. It is designed to last for decades, often handmade from noble materials that age well when properly cared for. This is precisely what makes the vintage market so strong: a Louis Vuitton piece from the 90s or a Gucci from the 2000s can be in excellent condition today if it has been carefully worn and properly stored.
But "pre-owned" doesn't mean "damaged." And it is precisely this misunderstanding that we want to clear up.

The grading system: how the market evaluates a bag's condition
The luxury resale sector has gradually aligned itself with a common grading scale, found on most reputable platforms. Here's what each grade concretely means:
Grade S — New / Never Used
The bag has never been used. It may still have its original tags, box, or dust bag. Extremely rare in the vintage market, and often very expensive because it combines the value of new with the rarity of vintage.
Grade A+ or Excellent — Near Mint Condition
Worn very little, or with exceptional care. No visible signs of wear. Stitching is impeccable, the leather or canvas shows no marks. Hardware is shiny, with no oxidation or scratches. This is the ideal condition for a pre-owned item.
Grade A — Very Good Condition
Slight signs of use, practically invisible in daily life. There may be very light marks on corners or handles, a very slight haze on the hardware. The bag's structure is perfect, the interior is clean. This is the benchmark for a quality pre-owned luxury bag.
Grade B — Good Condition
Visible signs of wear but normal for an item worn regularly. Slightly worn corners, some marks on the leather, patina on the handles. The bag is functional and presentable, but its history is visible on the material. Suitable for buyers who prioritize price over visual appearance.
Grade C — Fair Condition
Pronounced wear, significant marks, possible visible repairs. Attractive price, but the item has clearly seen a lot of use. Reserved for informed buyers who know what they are buying, or for very rare pieces whose historical value outweighs their condition.
Grade D and below — Poor Condition / For Parts
Heavily damaged items, cracks, tears, significant stains. This type of item has no place in a serious premium resale.
What RARR Vintage has chosen: only A to B-
At RARR Vintage, we made a clear editorial choice from the outset: we only select items in A (Very Good Condition) or B (Good Condition).
This is not a constraint—it's a conviction.
Here's what this means for you, concretely:
- No unpleasant surprises: each item is inspected and precisely described. What you see on the product page is exactly what you receive.
- Items you can wear immediately: no need for restoration, cleaning, or repair before use.
- Preserved resale value: an item in good condition resells well. By choosing an A or A+ grade, you are investing in something that retains its value.
- A consistent standard: whether it's a Louis Vuitton bag, a Chanel bag, a Gucci bag, or a Céline bag, the same level of expectation applies to each item.
How we evaluate an item's condition at RARR Vintage
Our inspection process is systematic and covers all critical points of a luxury bag:
Exterior Leather or canvas, corners, stitching, handles, shoulder strap, bottom of the bag—every surface is examined from different angles and lighting to detect the slightest mark.
Hardware and embellishments Clasps, snap fasteners, padlocks, strap hooks—we check for any oxidation, deep scratches, or loose parts.
Interior Lining, pockets, any stains or odors—the inside of a bag reveals as much as the outside about how it has been maintained.
Original elements Presence or absence of the padlock, keys, dust bag, box—everything is precisely mentioned in the product description.
Each item also goes through our authentication process, including Entrupy certification, an AI technology that guarantees authenticity with over 99% accuracy.
The brands we offer and what "very good condition" means for each
The condition of wear reads differently depending on the materials. Here are some useful benchmarks for the brands you'll find in our selection:
Louis Vuitton Monogram or Damier Canvas — LV coated canvas ages very well. A Grade A may indicate a natural patina of the Vachetta leather handles (which darkens over time), which is completely normal and appreciated by connoisseurs. Discover our selection of Louis Vuitton bags.
Chanel Leather — Lambskin is more susceptible to scratches than caviar leather. On our Grade A+ items, both leather types appear without visible marks. See our Chanel bags.
Gucci GG Canvas or Leather — The vintage Gucci items we select show perfect integrity of the canvas and leather. See our Gucci selection.
Céline Leather — The vintage Céline pieces we offer, especially the Macadam canvas, are chosen for the quality of their preservation. Discover our Céline bags.
Loewe, Dior, Ferragamo, Givenchy — The same level of expectation applies to all brands in our catalog. Find all our luxury bags.
Why some sellers offer Grade B or C — and why we don't
Grade C or D allows for offering items at lower prices and expanding one's catalog. It's a valid commercial strategy—but it's not ours.
Our belief at RARR Vintage is that second-hand luxury should remain a luxury experience. Receiving a bag with significant signs of wear, even at a reduced price, is not what we want you to experience. We prefer a more selective catalog, fewer but impeccable items, and genuine satisfaction upon receipt.
This is also why we offer a sourcing on demand service: if you are looking for a specific model in a specific condition, we can find it for you rather than offering you an item that does not meet your expectations.
What you should check on a product page before buying
Regardless of where you buy—from us or elsewhere—here are the points to always check:
- Is the grade clearly indicated and defined somewhere on the site?
- Do the photos show defects or only advantageous angles?
- Is the interior photographed?
- Are the corners and handles visible in the photos?
- Is authenticity guaranteed by a third party or only by the seller's word?
- Is there a return policy in case of disagreement with the description?
At RARR Vintage, each product page is accompanied by comprehensive photos from multiple angles, a precise description of the condition, and the Entrupy authenticity certificate.
