The Macadam was born in the 1970s, when Céline adapted the motif from the Triomphe emblem—a chain inspired by the arches of the Arc de Triomphe, just steps from where the house had its store—into a coated canvas. Repeated infinitely on a chocolate brown background, it creates a graphic and understated print, less loud than most monograms of its era. This restraint is what makes vintage Céline pieces so charming today: a clear signature, recognizable to those in the know, discreet to others.
This model offers a messenger version, reduced to the essentials. A rounded flap falling across the entire front, a leather strap running vertically across it, closing on a gold-tone brass buckle signed Céline—a detail reminiscent of the house’s saddlery roots. The buckle is decorative: a hidden magnetic snap button ensures closure, allowing the bag to be opened with one hand, without needing to undo anything. The elegance of saddlery without the hassle.
The caramel smooth leather of the flap, strap, and piping has developed a beautiful, uniform patina over the years, which contrasts nicely with the deep brown of the canvas. The strap, adjustable up to 120 cm, is worn crossbody for a hands-free style. Inside, there is a single compartment and a zip pocket; on the back, an additional slip pocket, convenient for a transit pass or phone.
