Hermès started as a harness-maker, and the horse has never left its silk scarves. Cheval Turc, designed by Christiane Vauzelles and issued in 1969, offers an Orientalist reading of this theme: at the center, a horse led by hand by a man in Turkish attire, treated like an antique engraving. All around, a decorative apparatus—foliage, trophies, drums, standards—frames the scene with the rigor of a tapestry cartouche. It is a dense, highly architectural design that reads flat like a print.
The scarf has become one of the house's true classics, reissued many times and in numerous colorways since its creation—which speaks for its success among collectors.
This version plays on a bold and graphic contrast: a deep royal blue that frames the ensemble and occupies the border, an ecru background that lightens the center, and golden foliage that structures the composition with touches of light blue. A striking palette, easy to wear with white, navy blue, camel, or denim. The silk twill gives the scarf its luster and drape, and the edges are hand-rolled—that rolled and needle-stitched finish that creates the small peripheral ridge characteristic of the house's scarves.
