Heraldry is a highly codified science that has governed the composition of coats of arms in Europe since the Middle Ages. Every noble family, city, and order has its own coat of arms, with strict rules for colors, divisions, and supporters. Hermès has frequently drawn from this vocabulary—the house has a pronounced taste for scholarly subjects that lend themselves to dense designs—and "Heraldry" is one of the most accomplished examples.
The composition is deliberately architectural. At the center, two large crowned coats of arms face each other, framed by a Gothic arcade with ribbed vaults. In the four corners of the scarf, four heraldic shields are each held by their animal supporters—lions, dragons, fabulous creatures—in the strictest tradition of blazonry. Fleurs-de-lis, Scottish thistle, Tudor rose, crescents, and stars punctuate the piece. Every element is there for a reason; every symbol refers to a lineage or a kingdom. The scarf reads flat like an ancient armorial plate.
The black background gives the design depth, and the palette takes on a particularly sophisticated character. Gold and yellow dominate, enhanced by red, pearl gray, and touches of sky blue in the shields. This is more of an evening scarf than a daytime one, the kind that is enough to brighten up a dark outfit—tied around the neck over a white shirt, at the waist over black trousers, or in the hair for a special event. The silk twill gives the piece its luster and drape, and the edges are hand-rolled.
