Tyger Tyger was born from a childhood memory. Alice Shirley, a British illustrator specializing in the animal world and a regular collaborator with Hermès, learned William Blake’s poem "The Tyger," written in 1794, by heart at school. These verses—among the most famous in the English language—describe an incandescent tiger in the forests of the night. Shirley transformed them into a drawing where a tiger of majestic softness rests in the center of the scarf, surrounded by golden spiraling feathers and multicolored flowers.
For the flora accompanying the feline, Alice Shirley drew inspiration from the botanical illustration collection at the Natural History Museum in London, originally commissioned by the East India Company. The plants depicted are those from the Periyar reserve in the state of Kerala, India—one of the last sanctuaries for the Bengal tiger. The result is a dense, narrative, and vibrant scarf at the intersection of English poetry, Indian botany, and Lyonnais craftsmanship.
The red background colorway gives the design a particular intensity. The golden yellows of the large spiraling feathers, the blues of the flowers, and the greens of the foliage stand out with force against this fiery base. The border is punctuated with white stars on a dark background, reminiscent of the night sky in Blake’s poem. The Carré 70 format—smaller and lighter than the classic Carré 90—is designed for a modern and easy way to wear: tied around the neck, slipped at the waist, in the hair, or as an accessory on a bag.
