Description & History
The Hermès L'Atlantide scarf in its pleated version · designed by Annie Faivre · issued in 1995, reissued in 1999 · 100% silk · navy blue, blue, green and gold palette · approximately 125 cm long when worn.
Annie Faivre is part of that select circle of in-house artists who have left a lasting mark on the style of Hermès scarves — having joined the house in the late 1970s and remaining prolific for over three decades, she has signed some of the most recognizable designs in the catalog, each bearing her discreet signature hidden within the pattern like a small frog or salamander to be discovered. L'Atlantide, issued in 1995 and reissued in 1999, is inspired by the mythical island mentioned by Plato — a fabulous city swallowed by the waves after defying the Greeks, a memory of a golden age dissolved into oblivion. Annie Faivre created a deeply atmospheric composition, in a palette of oceanic blues, seaweed greens, gold, and mineral off-white — the colors of the deep sea and sunken palaces. This particular version is a pleated scarf: made with exceptional artisanal skill, the 90x90 scarf is hand-pleated across its entire surface before being set, giving it this undulating texture with changing reflections and an elongated shape of approximately 125 cm when worn. An accessory that is both more sculptural and easier to wear than the classic scarf: to be tied around the neck as a loose cravat, belted on a high waist, worn as a headband in the hair, or left to float on the handles of a bag to instantly dress up a more sober outfit. Delivered here with its original orange Hermès box and composition tag, just as it was in the boutique.
