The Speedy was born in 1930 as a smaller version of the Keepall, designed for the city rather than travel—a miniaturized travel bag, meant to be carried by hand from one appointment to the next. The 30 is the most canonical version, the one Audrey Hepburn commissioned as a special order in the 1960s to carry daily, which in turn became one of the most replicated, imitated, and championed bags of the 20th century. Its entire grammar lies in a few elements: the Monogram canvas, the natural cowhide leather trim and handles left raw, the flat base, the zipper running from one side to the other, and the Louis Vuitton padlock hanging from the handle. Nothing to add, nothing to take away.
This example is dated 1992 by its date code VI****—a Speedy that is over thirty years old and wears its patina like an identity card. The cowhide leather, left bare when it left the workshop, has turned dark caramel after three decades of contact with air, light, and skin. This is what collectors look for in a vintage Speedy: that particular shade cannot be manufactured, restored, or replaced. The handles are slightly darker than the rest, a mark of the repeated touch of the hand that grips them. At 30 × 22 × 17 cm, the bag remains eminently wearable for daily use—spacious single compartment, one patch pocket, with room for a phone, long wallet, cosmetic pouch, passport, AirPods, and keys.
The piece is in good overall condition. The coated canvas is in good condition, the cowhide leather shows a beautiful dark caramel patina with handles that are slightly deeper in color. There is light rubbing on the handles and tabs, as well as slight cracking on the leather tab of the zipper pull (see photos)—traces consistent with the life of a piece over thirty years old. The zipper functions well with slight rubbing. The interior is clean with signs of prior use (see photos); no major flaws to report.
