The Speedy was born in 1930 as a smaller version of the Keepall, designed for the city rather than travel — a miniaturized travel bag to be carried by hand from one appointment to the next. The 30 is the most canonical version, the one Audrey Hepburn commissioned in the 1960s to carry daily, subsequently becoming one of the most reproduced, imitated, and championed bags of the 20th century. Its entire grammar lies in a few elements: the Monogram canvas, the natural cowhide leather trim and handles left raw, the flat base, the zip running from one side to the other, and the Louis Vuitton padlock hanging from the handle. Nothing to add, nothing to take away.
This example is dated 1999 by its SP**** date code — a late 90s Speedy, produced in French workshops at a time when two-letter, four-digit date codes were still the norm. The cowhide leather, left bare when leaving the workshop, turned dark caramel after over two decades of contact with air, light, and skin. This is what collectors look for in a vintage Speedy: that particular shade cannot be manufactured, restored, or replaced. The handles are slightly darker than the rest, a mark of the repeated touch of the hand that grips them. At 30 × 22 × 17 cm, the bag remains eminently wearable for daily use — spacious single compartment, one flat pocket, room for a phone, long wallet, cosmetic pouch, passport, AirPods, and keys.
The piece is in good overall condition. The coated canvas is in good condition, and the cowhide leather features a beautiful dark caramel patina with slightly more pronounced handles. There is light rubbing on the handles and tabs, as well as slight cracking on the leather zip slider tab (see photos) — traces consistent with the life of a piece over twenty years old. The zip works in good condition with minor rubbing. The interior is clean with signs of prior use (see photos), no major defects to report.
