From travel trunk to iconic bag
Louis Vuitton opened his trunk-making workshop in Paris in 1854. In 1888, the Damier canvas appeared to combat counterfeiting. In 1896, his son Georges Vuitton created the Monogram canvas in homage to his father: stylized flowers and the "LV" initials, which have become one of the most recognized luxury patterns.
Models to know
The Speedy was born in the 1930s under the name "Express" and became a classic of the Monogram canvas, popularized by Audrey Hepburn. The Noé was created in 1932 by Gaston-Louis Vuitton to carry five bottles of champagne. The Alma, designed in 1934 as the "Squire," took its current name in 1992, in reference to the Alma bridge. Epi leather, launched in 1985, remains one of the most durable and sought-after leathers on the second-hand market. For lighter use, small Louis Vuitton women's bags and pouches, such as the Pochette Félicie, the Pochette Accessoires, or the Papillon, are among the most in-demand pieces, and often the most accessible: find them also in our selection of luxury bags under €500.
